Forward Lookup Zone

1. What is Zone?

The zone is a subtree of DNS database. The zone contains the mapping information with the help of forward lookup zone & reverse lookup zone.

 

2. What is Forward Lookup Zone?How to configure Forward Lookup Zone?

Contains host record, which contains host names to IP, address mapping information.

 

Forward lookup zone records:

a. Host (A) Record : will contain Host name to IP mapping information

b. Mail Exchange: will point to the exchange server in our organization.

c. CNAME: we can give an alias name to the host record.

 

Setup of forward lookup zone:

Go to DNS console.

⇒ Right click on Forward Lookup Zone.

Select New Zone.

 Select primary Zone.

Select the Replication scope.

⇒ Provide Zone Name.

Select dynamic updates

3. Tell me about the records in Forward lookup zone?

a. Host (A) Record : will contain Host name to IP mapping information

4. How to create a Host record?

Right, Click on Zone name and select Host record.

5. How to create an Alias record?

Right, Click on zone name and select new alias(Cname).

Provide the alias name and browse for the host record which you want to give an alias.

6. What is Reverse Lookup zone?How to configure reverse lookup zone?

Reverse lookup zone will contain IP to hostname mapping information.

The reverse lookup zone contains, Pointer Record (PTR) which will have the IP to hostname mapping information.

 

Start Administrative ToolsDNS Right click on Reverse look up Zone Select NEW Zone Click Next

On the zone type Select primary Click on Next

Select the Reverse lookup zone name and enter the network id →Click on Next

7. Tell me about the records in Reverse lookup zone?
